The Serra da Estrela is an excellent gateway to high mountain ultra distances. The course is highly demanding and requires patience and the ability to abstract on the longest and steepest climbs.

A very beautiful, scenic route, passing by the Tower, is very physically and mentally demanding. The gradient presented should be considered as a whole and not just in one part. The Alvoco climb is just one of the long, eternal challenges of this distance.

The 8530 meters of positive climbing are already a foretaste of what this race will be like. Add to this adverse weather conditions and you have quite a challenge. A challenge that once overcome grants you the skills to finish other challenges around the world.

Viriato is a title. Viriato has to be strong and capable, when crossing the finish line at 160km, of letting go of everything and going out for another 40km. Being Viriato requires experience, training, dedication, and the will to be. To win the Viriato title you have to overcome the 200km distance and its monumental 10,000 meters of positive climbing.
